“SHOCKING! Governor Takes Drastic Action to STOP Gun Violence — You Won’t Believe What Happened Next!”
New Mexico’s Governor, Michelle Lujan Grisham, has taken decisive action to address a concerning rise in gun violence in Albuquerque. On Friday, she issued an emergency public health order that temporarily suspends both open carry and concealed carry of firearms in the city for 30 days.
Governor Lujan Grisham, who is a member of the Democratic party, acknowledges that there may be legal challenges ahead, but she felt it was necessary to respond to the recent increase in gun-related deaths. This includes the tragic shooting of an 11-year-old boy outside a minor league baseball stadium earlier this week.
The suspension of firearms possession is tied to a specific threshold for violent crime rates, which only Albuquerque currently meets. It’s important to note that law enforcement personnel are exempt from this temporary ban on carrying firearms.
During a press conference, Governor Lujan Grisham expressed the seriousness of the situation, saying, “These restrictions will present significant challenges for me as a governor and for our state.” She emphasized her willingness to engage in a robust debate and fight to find effective ways to enhance the safety of New Mexicans. The governor was joined by prominent law enforcement officials, including the district attorney for the Albuquerque area, highlighting a collaborative approach.
Governor Lujan Grisham pointed to several recent incidents of gun violence in Albuquerque that underscore the need for this action. One such incident was a road rage shooting just outside a minor league baseball stadium earlier this week, which resulted in the tragic death of an 11-year-old boy and the critical injury of a woman as they left an evening game.
Another heartbreaking event occurred last month when a 5-year-old girl, Galilea Samaniego, lost her life while sleeping in a motorhome. On August 13, four teenagers entered a mobile home community in two stolen vehicles just before 6 a.m. and opened fire on a trailer. The young girl suffered a fatal gunshot wound to the head and later died in the hospital.
Governor Lujan Grisham also highlighted the August shooting death of 13-year-old Amber Archuleta in Taos County. In this tragic incident, a 14-year-old boy used his father’s gun to fatally shoot the girl while they were at his home.
